As 2025 draws to a close, the Chippewa Valley reflects on a year marked by significant developments and community milestones.
Economic Growth and Development
In May, the Chippewa Economic Development Corporation celebrated Economic Development Week, highlighting the power of partnerships that drive innovation and growth in the region. The week featured events showcasing support for small businesses and major infrastructure projects, including broadband expansion initiatives.
July saw the opening of the Sonnentag Event Center, a state-of-the-art facility in Eau Claire. This multipurpose arena now hosts UW-Eau Claire Blugolds basketball and volleyball games, concerts, and community events, replacing the historic Zorn Arena.
Community Initiatives and Cultural Events
The Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the inaugural Business Day in Eau Claire, bringing together over 100 local professionals to discuss workforce trends and economic development opportunities. Keynote speaker Brad Gingras provided insights into business growth strategies.
In November, the Startup Chippewa Valley Keynote featured local entrepreneurs Zach Halmstad and Emily Laird, who shared their experiences in innovation and leadership, inspiring the next generation of business leaders in the region.
Healthcare and Infrastructure Developments
Addressing healthcare access, the Chippewa Valley Health Cooperative announced plans to build a new hospital in Lake Hallie. The project, estimated at $55 million, aims to provide essential services to residents, with groundbreaking expected in spring 2026.
In December, Cascades, a leader in green packaging and hygiene products, invested $6 million in its Eau Claire plant. This expansion is set to create 36 new jobs over the next two years, strengthening Wisconsin's paper industry.
Sports and Recreation
The Eau Claire Axemen, an indoor American football team, announced their debut in The Arena League for the 2025 season. Home games will be played at the newly opened Sonnentag Event Center, bringing a new sports experience to local fans.
Community Resilience
In September, the historic David Drummond House in Eau Claire suffered significant damage due to a lightning strike. Despite the loss, the community rallied to preserve the city's rich history and architectural heritage.
